I can't update the plugin

The following errors can sometimes happen when you try to update the plugin to a new version.

The update isn't appearing in Dashboard > Updates

You should be able to update the plugin via the main Updates page in the WordPress Dashboard. If you're sure that a new version of the plugin is available but it's not appearing for you to install, please check the following:

  • Is your license key active? If you have changed domain names (e.g. if you've moved from a development site to your live domain), go to the plugin settings page and re-save your license key to activate it on the live domain.
  • Has your subscription expired? If you bought the plugin more than 12 months ago and haven't renewed then your subscription may have expired. You will need to renew or re-purchase the plugin to get a new license key before you can update.
  • Has the update only just been released? If the new version of the plugin was released very recently, then it may not be available for you to install yet. It can sometimes take a while for updates to become available on all sites. Please check back later to see if the update is appearing for you.

Automatic update is unavailable for this plugin

This warning means that your license key is not active on your current domain. You can only update the plugin if you have a valid and active license key.

This normally happens if you have moved to a different domain since you first activated the license key. For example, perhaps you started using the plugin on a staging site and have since moved to your live domain name.

To fix the problem, simply:

  1. Log into your Account.
  2. On the 'Order History' tab, click on 'View Licenses' next to the relevant purchase.
  3. Click 'Manage Sites' on the next page.
  4. From this page, you can add and remove URL's that your license key is active on.

Once the license is active on the correct domain, you will be able to update the plugin from the WordPress Dashboard.

Error: SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO (or similar SSL error)

This SSL error means that your host is using an outdated version of OpenSSL and does not support the SSL Protocols that we are using to provide the latest version of the plugin. To solve the problem, you need to ask your web host or server administrator to update their OpenSSL software.

If this isn't possible, please send us a support request with your WordPress logins and we can activate your license key manually if needed.

Error: Forbidden

This 403 error means that something on your website is blocking the new version of the plugin from being downloaded. For example, this can be caused by a security plugin or a file permissions issue.

Kinsta have provided an excellent article on How to Fix the 403 Forbidden Error in WordPress which will help you to find the cause of the problem.

Error: Update Package Unavailable

This means there’s a problem with your license key and it is not active on your website.

Please go to the plugin settings page and check that your license key is active. If it says your license key is valid but you’re still getting this error when you try to update the plugin, please delete your license key and re-enter it.

It may be that you have moved to a different domain since you first activated the license key. If this is the case, you need to go to the plugin settings page on the old domain and delete the license key so that you can re-activate it on the new domain. If the old domain no longer exists, please send us a support request and we will manually deactivate the license key from your old domain.

Error: PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT

Please check that your server has enough disk space for the update. As a general rule, you should assume that you need enough space for 2x the size of the .zip file containing the plugin. If this isn’t the problem, please send us a support request.

Could not create directory....

If you get an error saying that a directory could not be created, this could be caused by one of these issues:

File permissions on server

Most people who report this error have a file or folder permissions problem on their server. You will get the same error when you try to install or update any plugin, as it's not specific to our plugin.

Please try updating the plugin manually instead. If that doesn't work, try installing the new version of the plugin via FTP.

To fix the problem, you will need to contact your hosting company and ask them to change the folder permissions so that you can install plugins.

Windows server

If your website is hosted on a Windows server, then the 'Could not create directory' error can also be caused by a compatibility issue. You can fix this by installing the free Windows Compatibility Fix plugin.
