Can customers choose a variation when they get a free product?

WooCommerce Discount Manager has a 'Free products' option type, in which you can give away free products when the customer's cart meets certain criteria.

This article explains how to allow customers to choose a variation for their free product. For example, you might create a 'Buy 1 Barn2 t-shirt and get another free', in which the customer can choose a different size or color variation for the free t-shirt.

When creating a 'Free products' deal with WooCommerce Discount Manager, the customer is responsible for adding the free product to their cart. To use the example above, if they only add 1 Barn2 t-shirt to their cart then the free one won't be added automatically. Instead, the customer must add 2 Barn2 t-shirts to their cart and they will only be charged the amount for 1 of them.

This is equivalent to 'Free products' deals (e.g. buy one get one free/BOGO) in the supermarket, e.g. 'Buy 1 packet of pasta and get another free. You actually have to put 2 packets of pasta in your cart in order to get the second one for free.

This means that by definition, customers can select a different variation for the free product. All that matters is that the product or variation they want is included in the 'Free products' deal. So if your 'Free products' discount is set to apply to the 'Barn2 T-Shirt' product, then the customer can add any 2 variations and the cheapest will be free.
