How to show variations as separate products

WooCommerce Product Filters can show each variation of a variable product as its own product in your shop, either all the time or only after a customer filters. Turn this on in the Variations display section at Products → Filters → Settings.

For example, you sell a T-shirt in red and blue, with a variation image for each color. When a customer filters by 'Red', the red T-shirt appears as its own product, with the red image and the title "T-shirt - Red".

Show single variations

Choose how variations appear:

  • Disabled - Variable products appear as normal. This is the default.
  • Always display variations as separate products - Variations appear as separate products on your shop and category pages, even before the customer filters.
  • Display variations as separate products after filtering - Customers see normal products until they apply a filter. Sorting on its own doesn't count as filtering.

Once a customer applies a filter, only the variations that match it appear. For example, if they filter by 'Red', they see the red variations but not the blue ones.

The setting applies to your whole store. When you first enable it, the plugin rebuilds the filter index in the background. A notice appears in the WordPress admin until this finishes.

Note: If another plugin on your site already shows variations as separate products, deactivate it before you use this setting.

Variation title format

  • Parent name + attributes - The product name followed by the variation's attributes, for example "T-shirt - Red". This is the default. We recommend it so that products don't look like duplicates.
  • Parent product name - The product name only, for example "T-shirt".

The title only includes the attributes that every variation on that product card shares. Product names in the WordPress admin don't change.

Grouping by image

Variations that use the same variation image appear together as one product. For example, a T-shirt with one image per color and three sizes in each color appears as one product per color, not one per size.

Each variation needs a variation image. If any visible variation has no image, that product appears as normal.

If a product card stands for more than one variation, it has a 'Select options' button. The button opens the product page with the shared options already selected. If the card stands for one variation, customers can add that variation to the cart from the shop page.

Where variations appear separately

  • The shop page
  • Product category, tag and other product taxonomy pages
  • Filtered and sorted results from WooCommerce Product Filters
  • The WooCommerce [products] shortcode
  • The Query Loop block
  • The WooCommerce Product Filters product list widgets for Elementor, Divi, Bricks and Avada

Note: This setting doesn't change WooCommerce Product Table, which has its own option to list each variation on its own row.
