Is Document Library Pro accessible?

We aim for Document Library Pro to meet or exceed accessibility guidelines. It has been built to meet accessibility guidelines, we regularly audit it and perform accessibility testing to identify any further changes which are required.

What accessibility standards do you test do?

We are committed to ensuring that Document Library Pro meets WCAG 2.1 Level A standards, which is the minimum requirement for a website or piece of software to be generally accepted as accessible.

Our ultimate goal is to meet Level AA standards, which is the level the EU requires for EAA compliance, and ADA compliance in the US for certain types of business. We will make changes to achieve this where it is realistic. There may be some instances where it is not realistic, for example if it would require a drastic usability or functionality change that isn’t practical or even breaks the features of the plugin.

Our testing process involves both automated and manual tools, including checking usability via popular assistive technology like screen readers and zoom tools. We also have a reusable suite of automated accessibility tests to ensure that future releases of our plugins remain accessible.

What about other accessibility legislation?

While we are committed to making sure all our plugins meet WC3 standards, it isn't realistic for us to test for more local legislation such as Section 508 (a US Federal accessibility standard).

It is ultimately the responsibility of the website owner to ensure that their website, including the output of our plugins, meets the legal requirements for accessibility in your area. This generally involves arranging regular audits of your website by certified accessibility experts.

Here are some resources to help you with this:

  • The Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker plugin is an excellent starting point. Equalize Digital also offer services to fix any accessibility issues that they find with your WordPress site.
  • AccessiCart offer ongoing accessibility maintenance plans. Existing Barn2 customers can get 10% discounts off their plans - see the customer Discount Center, or send us a support ticket if you need us to re-send the link to it.

Making PDF's accessible

Many Document Library Pro users don't realize that the PDFs in their document libraries must be accessible, as well as the document library itself.

AccessiCart have published a five-part series of articles about PDF accessibility:

  1. Intro and Series Overview
  2. Using the Accessibility Check Tool
  3. Reflow and Reading Order
  4. Document Tagging
  5. Conclusion
