Boost sales with WooCommerce combo offers: A guide

Boost sales with WooCommerce combo offers: A guide

Product combos are a great way to boost sales or offload slow-moving stock. In this detailed tutorial, I'll show you three strategies to offer WooCommerce combo products and how to promote them for maximum effectiveness.

There are several ways for WooCommerce stores to create combo offers. The most popular ones are:

  • Free products, for example, buy one get one (BOGO) or buy two get two (B2G2) deals.
  • Product bundles for a fixed price, for example, an electronics store can offer a washer and dryer deal for $500.
  • Product bundles for a fixed discount, for example, a store that sells personal care items can offer a shampoo and conditioner set.

No matter the type of WooCommerce combo product you want to offer, this guide has your back.

To begin, we'll discuss how offering product combos can benefit your store. Then, I'll show you step-by-step how to create the top three types of combo offers — free products, fixed-price product bundles, and fixed-discount product bundles.

Plugins used in this guide:

Let's get started.

How product combos benefit WooCommerce stores

Offering product combos is a simple but effective way to increase your average cart size. After researching 600+ WooCommerce stores that sell product bundles, I discovered that combo orders have an average order value (AOV) of $298, 91% higher than the AOV of non-bundle orders ($156). 80% of these stores achieved higher AOVs on their bundle orders vs. non-bundle orders.

Combo deals can significantly improve your WooCommerce store's bottom line. Here are some of the top benefits:

Increases average order values (AOV)

Product combos naturally increase the amount customers spend per transaction. Bundling relevant items together at a discount compared to buying each separately encourages customers to add more items to their cart to qualify for the savings.

Delights customers

Customers love feeling they’re getting a good deal. Product combos give them the opportunity to save money while purchasing products that complement each other. For instance, a store that sells skincare and beauty items could offer a primer, foundation, and concealer bundle. This not only meets the customers' needs in one go but also leaves them feeling pleased with their purchase.

Improves product discoverability

Combos help customers discover products they might not have considered before. Grouping related products together is a great way to introduce customers to items they might not have actively searched for. For example, a customer shopping for a laptop might not think to buy a laptop bag, but if it’s included in a combo, they’re more likely to consider it. This can lead to increased sales of products that might otherwise stay unnoticed.

Helps to move inventory quickly

Combo offers are an effective way to clear out slow-moving inventory from your WooCommerce store. Bundling less popular items with best-sellers encourages sales of products that would otherwise sit in your inventory. This is especially useful for seasonal items or products that are near their expiry date. For instance, let's say you sell footwear and you have a surplus of a particular style of shoes, you can bundle them with popular accessories like socks or shoe care kits to expedite sales.

Introducing the best plugin to display product combos in WooCommerce

Once you've created product combos on the backend, it's time to optimize how they're presented on the front end of your store.

So far, I've shown you how to use WooCommerce Discount Manager to display product labels that prominently promote the combo deals on product detail pages. However, there's still one thing left — displaying other products that are part of the combo offer. Customers still have to browse through your store to find and add them to their carts.

Enter: WooCommerce Product Options.

WooCommerce Product Options lets you display product combos with quick add-to-cart buttons right on the product detail pages. Here's a preview of how it'll look:

woocommerce product recommendations smartphone example
Display the other products from the combo deal directly on the page for the main product

For example, let's say you sell electronic items and are offering a discount when people purchase smartphones and relevant accessories like ear buds, charging kits, and memory cards, you can include accessories as add-ons on the smartphone product page, and smartphones as add-ons on the accessories product pages. This does three things: (1) it draws customers’ attention to the product and the discount, (2) boosts conversions, and (3) improves the shopping experience.

To reiterate, WooCommerce Product Options' key purpose is to promote the product combos on the product detail page while WooCommerce Discount Manager creates and manages the discounts as described above.

Note: WooCommerce Product Options is a full-featured product options plugin. In addition to displaying product combos, it lets you add custom fields like checkboxes, color swatches, etc., to the product detail page and offer additional options for each product. Check out more details here.

How to display product combos using WooCommerce Product Options
